Why Arabians?

Why Arabians?

Why Arabians?

What makes the Arabian horse so special? What are these fiery-eyed horses really made of? Are they dangerous? Are they “spooky”? Are they fragile? There are many stereotypes of this misunderstood breed, and many questions that arise when Arabians come into the conversation. Are you curious about what the reality is behind this elusive breed? Allow us to share with you our passion for these amazing creatures and hopefully enlighten you on what makes them the best in our book.

Arabians have an incredible, rich and fascinating history. You may have heard before that Arabians have played a major role in the creation of practically every breed of horse on the planet. Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, Morgans and many more can thank the Arabian for their development. Arabians are arguably the oldest breed around today.

Arabians LOVE people, and are extremely personable. Many Arabians would prefer spending time around people than other horses. I believe this is due to their extreme intelligence and inquisitive nature. Being close to humans is something that dates WAY back with Arabians. It was imperative that Arabians had a close relationship with humans for their survival. With the Bedouin tribes, Arabians were expected to sleep in the tents with their owners to protect them from the harsh desert elements, and from thievery. It was necessary for them to be gentle and quiet enough to come into the tents, but also ready for battle at any given moment. The trust and loyalty required between humans and Arabians was one of the initial “breed standards” and I believe is a quality that still holds true today.

Arabians are highly intelligent and sensitive. These qualities can actually be misunderstood, and can appear to be faults of the breed. Because of their heightened intelligence, they will not accept blatant force, or submit to demands. This is actually what makes working with Arabians so rewarding. Contrary to some beliefs, Arabians are extremely willing and eager to please. When you develop a mutual respect with an Arabian, they will be your best friend and you will find a partner that will give you 100%. However, try to force them to do something, and you will have a pretty big fight on your hands. Show them respect, love and guidance, and you will find an easily trainable horse.

When you spend time with Arabians, they will touch your heart. They have a personality that is undeniable, and an expression you can’t ignore. As Arabian owners and lovers, we respect their pride and encourage them to exhibit their spirit. We enjoy and respect the relationship we are so lucky to have with this magnificent breed. We do not wish to break them down to obedient machines.

“If you love a flower, don’t pick it up. Because if you pick it up, it dies and it ceases to be what you love. So if you love a flower, let it be. Love is not about possession. Love is about appreciation. – Osho

Because Arabians are so sensitive, they pick up on our own feelings and emotions. This is what makes them amazing therapy animals. Arabians are used frequently in therapeutic programs for special needs children and even elderly. They would step ever so lightly carrying a child as precious cargo. Arabians take the “horse and human” bond to a whole new level. If you are looking for a best friend, you need to look no further than the Arabian horse.

If you’re still looking for a reason to check out this amazing breed, you should know that there is absolutely something for everyone within the Arabian community. The Arabian is by far the most versatile breed on the planet. Whether you want to enter the main show ring in any discipline you desire, try your hand at endurance, or simply enjoy a trail riding partner the whole family can enjoy, the Arabian can provide any horse lover with the ultimate experience.

The idea that Arabians are hot, spooky, or even dangerous horses is simply a misunderstanding. Just as Pit Bull Terriers can be family dogs with huge hearts, Arabians can exhibit the gentlest nature. Now, just as you wouldn’t purchase an off-the-track Thoroughbred for your next family horse, there are Arabians that are bred for specific jobs that wouldn’t suit that role either. It is important to understand that with ANY breed of horse, there are variations within each individual breed, given the career they were bred for. Some Quarter horses were bred to run on the track or around barrels, some were bred to work cattle, and some were bred to be pleasure horses. Because of the versatility of the Arabian breed, you will come across many different temperaments and abilities.

Hear what a few life-time Arabian horse owners and advocates have to say about why they chose to own this magnificent breed and why they love them so much.

“They are regal in their beauty, intelligent, versatile, and have extreme athletic ability. With their diverse spectrum of ability there is an Arabian horse for everyone.” – Debbie Leete, North Carolina

“They are incomparable to any other. They are loyal, intelligent and loving. They provide peace for lost and troubled souls.” – Jayne Howell, United Kingdom

“Because they love their people so much. I believe they become just as attached to us, as we do them.” – Christina Beltz, Missouri

“Initially, yes beauty that drew us to the Arabian, but it is their personality and their soul. Arabians is a disease for which there is no cure. Once you have loved an Arabian, there is no other breed.” – Dixie North, California

“Early on, I had other breeds and then I found the Arabian. Their kindness, devotion, ability and yes, beauty changed my life for good. For me, there is only one breed, and that breed owns my heart.” – MD Isley, Iowa

“I have dabbled in other breeds and love them all, but none really compare to the Arabian. Their personality, human like qualities are second to none. They truly become members of the family. Their beauty cannot be denied, but their trainability, versatility, and ability to excel even at the open shows exemplifies how truly amazing and unique the Arabian is.” – Cari Denham

As you can see, Arabians make a huge impact on those that love them. They are beautiful, versatile, and intelligent. If you would like to know more about this incredible breed, contact us today. There’s an Arabian horse out there for YOU.

Nancy G Pierce  |  Professional Photographer

Nancy was born loving horses. She grew up drawing and riding them, but equine photography was not something she ever remotely considered as a profession until a chance opportunity literally fell into her lap in late 2006. Near the end of a 17 year English/journalism teaching career, pictures she took to help a friend caught the attention of some Arabian horse owners, and people started asking her to photograph their horses. She eventually bought an inexpensive Canon Rebel XT and a used lens, and discovered what was to become the greatest passion of her life – capturing the beauty, spirit and personality of the magnificent Arabian horse.

Without her intrinsic passion for Arabian horses, she would not have a photography career.  She has eaten, breathed, and slept Arabian horses – their conformation, pedigree, and history – for almost 50 years. It is the obsessive fascination and kinship Nancy feels for these regal creatures that makes it possible for her to connect with them in a way that allows her to capture the special qualities unique to each horse. Nancy is also a longtime breeder, so it is of utmost importance to her that the images she captures be accurate representations of the horses she photographs, and she believes photographic integrity is of the utmost importance.

Nancy has made her living photographing Arabian horses and designing the occasional ad or eblast. Nancy has photographed some of the most successful Arabian horses in the breed. Pierce photos grace the covers and the pages of some of the industry’s finest Arabian horse publications. Like all other skills, Nancy believes it is imperative to continue the learning process – and she feels blessed to be able to refine her skills as she indulges herself in her once in a lifetime love – the Arabian Horse.
